“The event is being held in the mall because we need people from different parts of Jeddah and of different backgrounds and ages to attend,” said Dr. Mahasen Khashugji, owner of Abjad. “We will be holding a series of entertainment programs where disabled girls can spend a day full of joy and fun with shoppers and members of the general public,” she added.

A number of events, including a competition and a play, are to be held on the day. “The last activity is a fun way to spread awareness about what these disabled girls deal with on a daily basis. We also aim to make people sympathize with them and experience the life they live,” said Khashugji. Abjad aims to develop the capability and skills of girls with special needs, and help them to rely on themselves and improve their social status by interacting with society. “The center also helps girls with special needs develop their ability to socially interact with their families and communities by directing them and training them appropriately and to readjust them psychologically, socially and professionally,” said Khashugji.

“We also help them by taking them on school fields to public places and ask the public to join them in an interesting and entertaining activities,” she added.

In 1992, the United Nations designated Dec. 3 as the International Day of People with Disability. The day is spent in activities to recognize the achievements and contributions of people with disabilities and to bring together disabled people with the general community.
