- WASHINGTON: Fifty World War II veterans who fought in the Battle of the Bulge will be honored with a performance of Christmas music by one of Belgium's premiere symphonic bands and the Choral Arts Chorus of Washington.
The concert Monday evening at the Kennedy Center features the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides. The band dates back to 1832 when King Leopold I formed a band with his personal guard.
This will be the band's third-ever US appearance. Previously, the band performed for President Herbert Hoover in 1929 and at Constitution Hall in 1994. The Battle of the Bulge fought in Belgium's Ardennes forest in the winter months of 1944-45 saw allied forces turn back a surprise German offensive in one of the bloodiest battles of World War II.
