In a cable to the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, King Abdallah described the explosion, which reportedly killed dozens of people outside a mosque, as "an act of terrorism."

The cable came only two days after the director of Ahmadinejad’s office Rahim Mashei delivered a message to King Abdallah inviting him to pay an official visit to Iran.

The Iranian president also expressed "keenness on developing ties between Iran and Jordan in various spheres," according to a royal court statement.

During the meeting with Mashaei, King Abdallah underlined the need for holding summit talks with the Iranian president in the near future either in Amman or Tehran to discuss "ways for bolstering bilateral ties on clear bases in such a manner that serves the interests of the two peoples, Islamic issues as well as security and stability in the region,” it added.

The discussions during the meeting also tackled "a number of regional and international issues and means of addressing them in a form that reflects positively on interests of the Islamic nation," the statement said.

Relations between Jordan and Iran appeared to have cooled over the past years after King Abdallah warned against the formation of a "Shiite crescent” involving Iran, Iraq, Syria and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

However, King Abdallah repeatedly called for a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear file and warned against the dangerous repercussions of a military action.
