Nafez Azzam, a senior leader in the Islamic Jihad Movement, said in a statement issued on Thursday that the accusations are an attempt to target resistance leaders in the Gaza Strip.

Abu Mujahed, spokesman for Al-Nasser Brigades, also made similar comments, saying the Israeli occupation is exaggerating the military capabilities of the Palestinian resistance in order to be able to destroy key infrastructure in Gaza Strip in the future.

On Wednesday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told European Union officials during a meeting in the West Bank city of Ramallah that he was concerned about a new Israeli military escalation against the Gaza Strip. He warned that any new Israeli aggression on Gaza will endanger the fragile peace process.

"Any new Israeli aggression on Gaza will put the entire peace process in danger and thwart all international efforts to rescue peace," Abbas said after he met with Christian Berger, the EU representative.

The warning came as Israel submitted a complaint to the UN over what it said was an escalation in projectile fire launched by local resistance in Gaza. Abbas urged the EU to put more efforts in reviving the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
