He also ordered highway repairs and more signs to warn drivers of dangerous conditions.

The two accidents are not the first to kill teachers who go to remote areas.

Deputy Minister of Education Norah Al-Faiz said in a recent forum on the participation of women in national development that there is little that the Ministry of Education can do to solve such problems.

She added that such teachers want full-time jobs and should accept the consequences of their decisions. She also said the Ministry of Education has a responsibility to provide education to children in rural villages.

The National Committee for Traffic Safety and the Ministry of Education along with other government departments suggested when discussing these accidents that the legal guardians of the teachers should be moved to the areas were the teachers work.

The head of the National Committee for Traffic Safety Muhammad Al-Ruwaishid told Al-Madinah daily that there are 15 recommendations that researchers have put down to reduce these accidents.

He added that both teachers and officials have supported the idea of allocating buildings next to the schools where teachers work and rent them at appropriate prices.

Al-Ruwaishid also added that there is a need to increase the driving awareness among drivers and check their capabilities before they take the teachers to schools. He also suggested that the discipline should be tough for violating drivers.

A field study revealed that in many cases the vehicles being used to transport teachers are unsafe. One study found that over one in four tires of these vans are more than 10 years old, increasing the chance of dangerous blowouts.

Al-Ruwaishid said their study ordered allocation of safe government-owned buses that could transfer the teachers to their locations.
