Waheed Anjum held the press conference after Aziz and Khurram Shehzad, former SP of Rawal Town Police, were detained and sent for judicial remand by an anti-terrorist court on Wednesday.

“It was decided in the security plan that Bhutto would not come out of her jeep after the public rally. Malik had assured the Rawalpindi police that he would himself accompany Bhutto after the rally. But he fled from the scene of the attack. The vehicle Malik was in was supposed to provide cover to Bhutto, but Malik took away the vehicle himself,” said Anjum.

Anjum said it was a legal requirement that Bhutto underwent a postmortem, but President Asif Ali Zardari refused permission for him.

Anjum presented all relevant documents relating to the security plan, a record of Zardari’s postmortem refusal and Malik’s written statement agreeing to follow the security plan.

Aziz has dramatically changed his statement in Bhutto’s murder, which happened three years ago.

The anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi also refused on Wednesday to keep Aziz and Shahzad on physical remand following a request from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

The court turned down the request and sent the accused to jail on judicial remand. The court also ordered the FIA to present the two accused in court on Jan. 12.

Speaking to the media after the hearing, Aziz’s lawyer said that the allegations leveled against his client were baseless. He said that both of the accused were public servants and did not have links to any political groups.
