Prosecutors accused Heri Sigo Samboja, 28, of wanting to bomb the embassy because of anger over a Danish newspaper’s publication of cartoons of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.

The defendant had been released from prison in October 2008 after serving time for other terror-related crimes and was re-arrested last June.

The prosecutor told the Jakarta District Court on Thursday that the defendant also planned to attack the National Police headquarters in Jakarta to seek revenge for the deaths of Islamic fighters.

He could face the death penalty if convicted.
