- JOS, Nigeria: Rioters have set homes ablaze and angry youths armed with machetes have set up roadblocks throughout a central Nigerian city plagued by violence between Christians and Muslims.
Witnesses heard gunshots Sunday and saw smoke rising from neighborhoods in the city of Jos. Plateau state police commissioner Abdurrahman Akano told journalists there was violence and that officers had been sent to control the rioters.
The fighting comes after at least 11 died Saturday around Jos from religious violence and a political rally gone awry.
Jos has been the epicenter of religious violence in Nigeria's "middle belt," where dozens of ethnic groups vie for control of fertile lands. Politics, jobs and land often motivate violence that falls along religious lines.
