- JEDDAH: A massive fire broke out at a junkyard in north Jeddah on Sunday afternoon, destroying a large number of car parts and damaging scrap cars.
- No loss of life was reported in the blaze that began around 2 p.m.
“Several cars were damaged because of the fire. Several firefighting trucks were used to control the fire using fire-fighting foam. Thank God, there were no fatal injuries,” said Brig. Abdullah Al-Jeddawi, director of the Civil Defense in Jeddah.
It is unclear how the fire started. However, an electric short circuit is thought to have been the catalyst. “Some of the vehicles had petrol in their tanks and there could have been anything that could have sparked the blaze,” said Suleiman Isam, a 58-year-old junkyard owner.
He added that some of the junkyards in the area are oddly positioned and that the Jeddah municipality should pay extra attention to the area or move it somewhere safe to avoid future problems, especially due to the high voltage electric cables that run over the area.
