“We have discussed with the Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) the proper means to develop special museums for geological antiquities and landmarks and to start archaeological research through a specific timetable for such projects,” said Prince Sultan in a statement on the SCTA website.

He stressed the importance of focusing on domestic tourism and expressed regret that in spite of the great potentials, many tourist sites have not yet been developed.

He said that the Kingdom is home to many tourism features along its shores, especially sea resorts, which he considers not yet ready and may lose millions of domestic tourists in the coming summer season.

Regarding the issuance of tourist visas to foreigners, he said, "We have stopped it temporarily to achieve larger interests. Currently, our focus is on domestic tourism, targeting domestic tourists in proportion to foreigners in the Kingdom.

“Recently, we have granted visas to foreign tourists and it was a successful move. The visas were granted to distinct categories and select groups, and this limits the number of tourists each year to less than 15,000.”

He added that tourist groups are sponsored by private Saudi tour operators that provide them with excellent services.

Prince Sultan added that he has signed a memorandum of understanding with SGS chief Zohair bin Abdul Hafeez Nawab to expand areas of cooperation.
