First Lt. Muhammad Al-Hubail, deputy spokesman for the Civil Defense in the Riyadh province, told Arab News that work at the construction site would be stopped until investigations are completed.

“We are now trying to find out the reasons for the collapse of the scaffolding at the construction site, causing deaths and injuries,” he said.

Al-Hubail said the 11 injured workers are receiving treatment at three hospitals — Kingdom Hospitals, National Hospital and Obaid Hospital.

He refused to speculate on the reasons for the accident before the completion of investigations.

Witnesses said work in other parts of the campus project were continuing despite the accident, as contractors have to finish the work within a specific period.

The Princess Noura University campus project is one of the largest projects under construction in the capital. People traveling to King Khaled International Airport stop their vehicles nearby to see the huge project, which covers thousands of square meters.

Located east of Riyadh, the university was established under the instructions of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to bring together all women colleges in the capital under one roof.
