- RIYADH: The Ministry of Health has set better nutrition standards in food served to patients of government hospitals, according to Deputy Health Minister Mansour Al-Hawasi.
"In addition to our internal arrangements about nutrition, we also hope to carry out a nationwide awareness campaign to educate people on the consumption of safe foods and its related health issues," he said during an event on nutrition on Wednesday held at King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh. The ministry's Directorate for Nutrition supervises 20 nutrition management centers and 244 nutrition departments in hospitals with more than 1,000 nutrition specialists. It also supervises more than 6,000 food-catering employees and workers who belong to 25 registered food caterers that serve government hospitals that provide approximately 50,000 meals to Saudi public hospital patients and staff every day. Speaking about Saudi eating habits in general, the ministry's General Nutrition Supervisor Mishary Al-Dakheel said change in Saudi lifestyles, including overeating and lack of exercise have led to new eating-related adverse health conditions, including obesity, osteoporosis, inflammatory bowel disease, allergies and heart disease.
