- NAIROBI: Kenya earned 73.68 billion shillings ($887.1 million) from tourism in 2010 compared with 62.46 billion shillings a year earlier, but failed to hit its 100 billion target, the tourism minister said.
“Our traditional markets are down, the markets that did well are India and Italy,” Najib Balala said.
Traditional markets for Kenya include the United Kingdom, Germany and North America.
Tourist arrivals stood at 1.1 million visitors, short of a 1.2 million target for the year.
Tourism, among top foreign exchange earners for Kenya alongside horticulture and tea exports, was one of the hardest-hit sectors by the country’s bloody post-election crisis in early 2008.
