- BENGHAZI, Libya: A rebel spokesman said on Saturday anti-government troops had driven out forces loyal to Muammar Qaddafi who had entered the eastern city of Benghazi.
“We revolutionaries have taken control of four tanks inside Benghazi. Rebel forces have pushed Qaddafi’s forces out of Benghazi and are combing the western gate area for Qaddafi’s troops,” Nasr Al-Kikili, a lawyer who works for the rebel media center in Benghazi, said.
Shortly before, there were celebrations in Benghazi when hundreds of residents came out into the streets firing guns in the air and women ululated to celebrate the reported rebel successes.
One tank with about a dozen of people on top of it toured round on a victory parade in the city.”We are victorious, we are victorious,” they chanted.
