“The commission is waiting for the coroner's report on a two-year-old boy’s death, suspected to be caused by domestic abuse,” Director of the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) in Jazan Ahmad Al-Bahkali said on Sunday.

The baby, Turki, was born to an Indonesian housemaid following her affair with a Saudi. The mother was deported after she delivered the baby.

Al-Bahkali said the NSHR has asked the governorate in Jazan not to hand over the body to relatives for burial because of suspected foul play.

“We have also asked the Foreign Ministry to inform the baby's mother in Indonesia of the baby's death," the official said.

A court in Jazan jailed the father for one year and ordered him not to enter the province for another year. "The NSHR has found many violations of the Kingdom's regulations in the treatment of the Indonesian woman and her baby," Al-Bahkali said.

In the first place, custody of the baby should have been given to the mother instead of the father's family, he said.

He added that the Passport Department committed another breach of regulations when it insisted on the deportation of the mother without her baby and then not handing over the baby to a relevant government agency such as the Ministry of Social Affairs.

"Saudi law stipulates that any baby born of illegal relations to an expatriate woman should be named on the mother’s passport and should travel with her," the official pointed out, adding that it was the negligence and errors of concerned departments that led to the tragedy.

He said the NSHR would also investigate why the baby was added to the father’s family register.

Al-Bahkali also called on the media to cooperate with it in discovering such violations, including family abuse and domestic violence.
