Cabrera connected in the sixth inning off John Danks (0-1), putting Cleveland ahead 2-1 and helping the Indians avoid a three-game sweep.

In the fourth, Carlos Santana began a triple play in his first major league game at first base. Santana, normally a catcher, made a diving catch on Alexei Ramirez’s bunt with two runners in motion. He threw to first to double off A.J. Pierzynski . Second baseman Orlando Cabrera took the throw and tossed to shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to catch Carlos Quentin off second base.

It was Cleveland’s first triple play since Asdrubal Cabrera’s unassisted one against Toronto on May 12, 2008. Chicago had not hit into a triple play since April 22, 1978, at Toronto.

Indians starter Justin Masterson (1-0) allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings.

Rangers 5 Red Sox 1: In Arlington, Texas, Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz became the first set of teammates to homer in each of the first three games in a season, and Matt Harrison pitched Texas to a sweep of its season-opening series.

David Murphy and Mike Napoli also homered as Texas’ first three hits — and four of five — were solo shots.

The reigning AL champion Rangers really thumped the favorites for this year’s pennant, hitting 11 home runs on the way to outscoring them 26-11 in the series.

Twins 4 Blue Jays 3: In Toronto, Danny Valencia and Denard Span homered, and Minnesota held on to avoid a three-game sweep.

Jose Bautista hit his second homer of the season but it wasn’t enough for the Blue Jays, who left the bases loaded in the ninth when Adam Lind grounded out against closer Joe Nathan .

Nick Blackburn (1-0) pitched 5 2-3 innings for the win and Nathan worked a nervous ninth for his first save since 2009. He missed last season following Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

Orioles 5 Rays 1: In St. Petersburg, Florida, Zach Britton pitched six sharp innings in his major league debut and J.J. Hardy hit a two-run double, leading Baltimore to the season-opening three-game sweep.

Britton (1-0) allowed one run and three hits, struck out six and walked three. Recalled before the game from Triple-A Norfolk, Britton had around 30 family members and friends in attendance.

Mark Reynolds hit a tiebreaking RBI double in Baltimore’s three-run seventh, which also featured Hardy’s big hit. Reynolds added another run-scoring double in the ninth.

Tigers 10 Yankees 7: In New York, Miguel Cabrera hit a pair of two-run homers, Brennan Boesch had a two-run shot and four RBIs, and Detroit earned its first win of the season.

Boesch matched a career high with four hits and scored four times as the Tigers rebounded from a 10-6 loss Saturday without No. 3 hitter Magglio Ordonez in the lineup. The right fielder sat because his surgically repaired ankle was sore.

Jorge Posada smashed a pair of two-run homers, Mark Teixeira connected for the third straight game and Robinson Cano hit his first of the season for New York, which was trying for its first 3-0 start since 2003.

Royals 12 Angels 9, 13 innings: In Kansas City, Missouri, Matt Treanor hit a three-run homer with two outs in the 13th inning, sending the Royals to their third straight victory in their last at-bat.

Kansas City tied it with two runs in the ninth off Fernando Rodney , who started the inning and walked the bases full. With one out, Wilson Betemit doubled just in front of a diving Vernon Wells in left-center, tying it at 9.

Kevin Jepsen , shaky in his two other appearances in the series, then walked Alcides Escobar but got Treanor to ground into a force at the plate and Mike Aviles to ground into a force at third.

Athletics 7 Mariners 1: In Oakland, California, Mark Ellis drove in three runs to back Gio Gonzalez’s strong 2011 debut and Oakland avoided a season-opening weekend sweep.

Coco Crisp hit an RBI triple in the third inning and missed hitting for the cycle by a home run. Hideki Matsui doubled to start the second for his first hit with the A’s after an 0-for-7 start and added an RBI single in a four-run seventh. It also gave the slugger a combined 2,500 hits between his career in Japan and the major leagues.

Ryan Langerhans homered in the second but the Mariners managed little else against Gonzalez (1-0), a 15-game winner last season who improved to 5-1 for his career against Seattle.
