- JOHANNESBURG: Italian diplomats are awaiting confirmation of the cause of death of a leading Italian businessman who died in Cape Town so that they can help return the body to Italy.
Marco Giungi, deputy head of the Italian mission in Pretoria, said it was believed natural causes, possibly a heart attack, led to the death Monday in Cape Town of Pietro Ferrero, the CEO of the confection producing Ferrero Group.
The Ferreros are among Italy’s richest families.
In Cape Town, police spokesman Frederick van Wyk said Tuesday the cause of death had not been confirmed.
Giungi says Italian diplomats are in touch with police and the Ferrero company.
The company’s press office has said Ferrero fell off his bike while riding in Cape Town, and it is unclear what prompted the fall.
