- JEDDAH: Schools affected by the Jan.
- 26 floods in Jeddah are finally getting the renovation needed thanks to designer Hatem Alakeel and his fashion brand Toby, who donated his money as part of his social responsibility to help damaged schools to get back on track.
Alakeel has contacted the volunteers of the Young Initiative Group (YIG), who agreed to help him renovate two schools that were affected by the floods.
In Dar Al-Salam School, located in an underprivileged area of the city, 600 Saudi girl students are currently attending classes in shifts due to limited space. The school has only 14 classrooms and three bathrooms.
Bangladesh International School is another school that suffered severe damage during the floods. It will soon be renovated by the YIG volunteers.
“The Bangladeshi school is one of the schools that were damaged most after the floods. They lost books, desks, computers, carpets, printing machines and much more,” said Maha Taher, co-founder of YIG.
“Dar Al-Salam is another school that is in bad shape. It has been this way before and after the floods, and we aim to help them regularly. They have 730 students attending in shifts,” she added.
Toby is very much involved in the renovation work. It is providing necessary funds while YIG is executing the project. “We welcome any volunteer who wants to join this noble cause. The numbers of volunteers vary, based on whether it’s a working day, weekend, or vacation, but usually volunteers involved in this project are around 100 people,” said Taher.
According to Taher, repairing both schools will take time, depending on the funds available. “Small renovations like plumbing and electricity wiring take a few days; building new classrooms, roofs and floors, on the other hand, may take weeks,” she said.
Toby is a trendy yet traditional brand that offers thobes for men. Franchised from this brand is The Toby Peace People Series, a non-profit organization that is continually working toward giving back to the people in need. The organization depends on specific charities to assess the needs of beneficiary communities.
This is Toby Peace’s first fund-raising project.
Alakeel is from Jeddah, and after the tragic floods that swept the city, the organization decided this would be the perfect place to start this noble initiative.
Toby Peace was established over a year ago through an awareness campaign, in which people of stature, such as celebrities, royalty and industry insiders, were photographed, wearing the cuff in hope to shine light on the strife of the Palestinian people.
