- JEDDAH: Almost six months after the rain disaster in Jeddah, efforts to contain its aftermath continue.
- The latest of the remedial efforts was the completion of a project to refurnish a number of damaged homes.
The scheme was a joint effort by Al-Bir Welfare Society and Al-Waleed bin Talal Charity Foundation (WTCF).
Chairman of Al-Bir’s board of directors Mazen Batterjee said the society had completed distributing the household appliances provided by the WTCF after specifying the needs of the victims.
He said the appliances, consisting of air conditioners, refrigerators and washing machines, were distributed in Al-Balad, Hindawiyah, Dhahban and Al-Khumra districts.
“The distribution plan was approved by the coordination committee formed by the Ministry of Social Affairs,” Batterjee said. “The society has implemented a number of relief projects for the victims since the beginning of the rain crisis,” he added.
Batterjee lauded Al-Waleed Foundation’s efforts to relieve the suffering of the victims and said the foundation has been successfully carrying out its noble humanitarian and relief message.
Al-Bir Society has coordinated with government bodies and other charity organizations to reconstruct and furnish a number of houses that were destroyed or damaged by the rains through a major project, supervised by the Makkah governorate, the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The Al-Bir Society was established in 1980 under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Affairs. The Makkah governor is its honorary chairman. It extends various forms of assistance to the poor and needy including financial aid, education, health and social services. It has established a number of welfare clinics and dialysis centers in addition to charity homes to accommodate the elderly, orphans and homeless people.
The society is also organizing training sessions to qualify the poor and needy, and conducting studies and researches in the field of charity and relief work. It holds welfare bazaars and provides guidance and awareness services.
