The Interior Ministry said Sunday Juma Ibrokhimov was killed the previous day along with a local accomplice during a security sweep in the remote and mountainous Rasht valley in the center of the Central Asian nation.

Ibrokhimov had been jailed on charges that included membership of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan terrorist group.

He was one of 25 inmates to escape from a high-security detention facility in a dramatic breakout in August.

The escape was an embarrassing blow for the ex-Soviet nation’s authorities, which has been waging a battle against armed Islamist radicals. Since then, the government has scored several major successes against prominent insurgents and recaptured or killed most of the escapees.
