Parliament was holding a debate over two Kuwaiti detainees in the US prison camp in Cuba whom Washington has refused to release when MP Hussein Al-Kallaf provoked some fellow MPs by dismissing the prisoners as "Al-Qaeda militants."

Chaos erupted when Jamaan Al-Harbash of the Muslim Brotherhood told Al-Kallaf the debate was not called to discuss Al-Qaeda but Guantanamo prisoners.

Six lawmakers were involved in the fight, prompting acting Speaker Abdullah Al-Rumi to adjourn the session.

Later, Speaker Jassem Al-Khorafi described the unprecedented fight as "shameful" and the adjourned the house until May 31 and ordered Parliament's bureau to investigate.

Independent MP Rudhan Al-Rudhan called on the emirate's ruler to use his constitutional powers to suspend Parliament's sessions for one month.

MP Adnan Al-Mutawa, who received a cut under the eye during the scuffle, accused some MPs of not believing in democracy, saying attacking rival MPs physically "is a form of terrorism."

The debate was attended by a delegation of US lawyers defending the Gitmo inmates.

During the debate, some MPs called on the government to press the United States to free the two Kuwaiti inmates or complain to the International Criminal Court.

The United States has released 10 Kuwaitis from Guantanamo but rejected all appeals from its staunch ally to free the remaining two.

In another development, Iran's foreign minister said his nation and Kuwait's leaders have agreed to allow the return of ambassadors recalled in a dispute over an alleged Iranian spy ring.

The accord is part of efforts to ease tensions after Kuwait accused Iran of masterminding an espionage ring that included surveillance of US and Kuwaiti military sites.

Iran denies the claims, but the accusation led both nations to expel diplomats in recent months and withdraw ambassadors.

The official news agency KUNA said Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi held talks Wednesday with Kuwait's emir and other top officials.

Iran's relations with Gulf states are under severe strain. Iran has sharply criticized a Gulf force that was invited by Bahrain to maintain order in the island kingdom after a month of protests.
