- YANBU: Yanbu Industrial College (YIC) has joined hands with the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the world apex body of the chemical sciences, and the UN to celebrate 2011 as the international year of chemistry.
The purpose of the event is to celebrate the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well being of mankind.
YIC is commemorating the event by organizing the “YIC-Chemfest” or Chemiluminescence with the support of its Managing Director Ahmed Dabroom and Deputy Managing Director Ghasim Alandjani.
The UN passed a resolution in 2008 in its 63rd General Assembly declaring 2011 as the international Year of Chemistry, giving the responsibilities of the celebrations to IUPAC and UNESCO.
While chemical giant Dow and the European Petro Chemical Association (EPCA) are the global partners, reputable organizations like BASF, Cefic, DuPont, Solvay, Evonik, Phosagro, Elsevier, Agilent Technologies, Waters, American Chemical Society, Pfizer and GSK are the major sponsors of the celebrations.
On its part, the YIC's Department of Chemical Engineering Technology has launched a series of programs and student activities under the aegis of YIC Chemfest. Its website (http://chemiluminescence.yic.edu.sa) gives details of the programs aimed at attracting the Kingdom’s young generation to the world of chemical sciences.
