Speaking to Arab News on Thursday, police officer Tariq Dharejo said both the Sindh and federal governments have accorded top priority to the case. Senior officers from different security agencies have been charged to deal with the high profile crime, he said.

“We have collected necessary data from different organizations including cell phone companies. Details of the investigation are being kept a secret so the perpetrators cannot take advantage of any sensitive information,” said Dharejo. “We are keeping a low profile but moving forward and have made substantive progress.”

Since the killing, security has been beefed up around the Saudi mission in Pakistan.

On May 17, a suspect in the murder was detained. Sharifuddin Memon, adviser to the Sindh chief minister, and Saud Mirza, a Karachi police officer both identified the suspect as Muntazir Imam, alias Tunda, from Shah Faisal Colony in Karachi. His role in the killing and his affiliation with extremism are unknown or classified.

The Pakistani government has announced a bounty of five million rupees (SR217,641) for information leading to those involved in the attack.

Karachi police have not yet released the CCTV footage from cameras monitoring roads leading to the Saudi Consulate.
