Participants shouted slogans calling for severing diplomatic ties with Israel and the abrogation of the 1994 peace treaty with the Jewish state.

In Tafileh, 180 kilometers south of Amman, hundreds of pro-democracy activists took to the streets calling on Bakhit to step down for his “failure” to carry out the needed political reforms.

They also protested against, what they called, the failure of security officials in the area to allow their representatives to meet King Abdallah during his visit to Tafileh on Monday.

Demonstrations calling for the government’s resignation were also held in the cities of Karak, Thiban and Irbid.

In Mafraq, 40 kilometers northeast of Amman, dozens of citizens demonstrated to protest government plans to build a nuclear reactor in their area.

Energy Minister Khalid Touqan said earlier this week that his government planned to go ahead with its nuclear program, considering it “strategic option.”

However, he promised not to build the nuclear reactor before the inhabitants were convinced of its benefits and the safety measures taken to prevent any negative environment fallout in their area.
