Surojit Kar Purakayastha, an inspector-general of police, says four died in the mountainous Kurseong region and three in and around Kolkata, the state capital, overnight and Friday.

Police said winds of 65 kph uprooted nearly 100 trees in Kolkata and the rains flooded some low-lying areas of the city.

Purakayastha said nearly 20 trawlers with 200 fishermen sheltered in creeks during the storm and have returned to their coastal villages.

Monsoon rains lash India from June to September.

In neighboring Bangladesh, monsoon flooding has covered low-lying areas in the vast southern coast along the Bay of Bengal, marooning thousands of people.

The United News of Bangladesh agency reported incessant rains triggered by a monsoon depression have damaged several flood protection embankments.

It says a 5-year-old girl was washed away in the Cox’s Bazar district after tidal surges destroyed parts of an embankment. The Bengali-language Sangbad newspaper says hundreds of fishing boats have returned from the sea because of bad weather. The depression crossed Bangladesh’s coast by Friday but rains continued. Government officials could not be reached immediately as Friday is part of the weekend in Bangladesh.
