But the number of women running for office has slowed after years of steady gains. There are about as many women in Congress as there were in 2007, and the number of women in state legislatures dropped after the 2010 elections. It's a source of frustration for activists concerned about the lack of progress for women in politics even as they've begun to outpace men in fields like academia, medicine and law.
