- SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq: Hundreds of Kurds are rallying in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil calling for international intervention in neighboring Syria.
Iraqi and Kurdish officials said about 200 people from the Syrian opposition living in northern Iraq gathered in front of the UN offices in Irbil Monday morning.
Abdul-Baqi Mohammed told The Associated Press by telephone the protesters are calling for international intervention in Syria similar to NATO’s campaign in Libya.
Many Kurdish members of Syrian opposition groups live in the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq. Kurds are a minority in Syria and complain of widespread discrimination.
