Google is going for a frontal assault against Microsoft Windows with the Chromebook, which has just launched in the US and Europe. The Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is specifically designed around the principles of speed, simplicity and security. It’s for people who live their lives online, in the browser window, and who don’t really care about using Microsoft products. The Chromebook has a slim 0.79-inch body, a 12.1-inch Super Bright display and weighs 1.48kg. The keyboard offers a dedicated search key, a row of web-enabled keys and a comfortable, full-size layout. This netbook runs an Intel dual-core processor, is equipped with an HD Webcam, built-in digital microphone, stereo speakers, two USB ports and provides support for removable media cards. Whereas the average out-of-the-box laptop starts up in 45 seconds, the Samsung Series 5 starts in less than ten seconds. The Chromebook runs the first consumer operating system designed from inception to defend against malware and viruses, employing the principle of “defense in depth” to provide multiple layers of protection.
