A day after matching a season high for hits with 16, the Pirates’ offense had 13 off Houston’s Brett Myers (3-8) — the most he’s allowed in 234 career starts.

Chase d’Arnaud, Garrett Jones, Neil Walker and Lyle Overbay each had two hits for Pittsburgh, which played in front of its fourth consecutive home sellout — another sign of how rare it is for the Pirates to be in contention.

Paul Maholm (5-9) allowed one earned run in six innings for the Pirates.

Nationals 5 Cubs 4, 10 innings: In Washington, Jayson Werth turned boos to cheers by scoring the winning run on a wild pitch in the 10th inning, and the Nationals snagged another one-run victory.

Werth opened the inning by drawing a walk off Marcos Mateo (1-2), then advanced on a sacrifice by pinch-hitting pitcher Livan Hernandez . Mateo was replaced by Carlos Marmol, and Werth stole third on Marmol’s first pitch to Ivan Rodriguez .

Then Marmol uncorked a 2-2 pitch that sailed way outside to Rodriguez. Werth scored and was mobbed by his teammates.

Phillies 1 Marlins 0: In Miami, Vance Worley pitched seven sharp innings and Philadelphia scored the only run on a close play in the seventh to beat Florida.

Michael Martinez , playing for an injured Shane Victorino, got his fifth RBI with a single to center. A sliding Domonic Brown barely beat the throw home, although a TV replay appeared to show he was out.

The Marlins argued only briefly, but twice had a player ejected for disputing other calls.

Worley (4-1) allowed two singles and walked two while lowering his ERA to 2.21 in 10 games. Antonio Bastardo pitched a hitless ninth for his fifth save to complete a two-hitter for the Phillies, who lead the majors with 13 shutouts.

The Phillies have won 20 of their past 24 games in Miami.

The Marlins arrived home at 5 a.m. after a nine-game trip, and their batters looked weary. Their last hit came in the third inning, and Florida lost for the 15th time in its past 16 games decided by one run.

Cardinals 1 Reds 0: In St. Louis, Chris Carpenter outdueled Cincinnati Reds nemesis Johnny Cueto with eight impressive innings, then watched from the dugout as pinch-hitter Mark Hamilton drove in the lone run with an infield hit for St. Louis.

Cueto (5-3) allowed six hits in eight innings in his first appearance against the Cardinals since he spiked Carpenter on the back and dealt Jason LaRue a career-ending concussion with kicks during a brawl in Cincinnati Aug. 11. Cueto and Brandon Phillips, whose bat tap to catcher Yadier Molina’s shin guard had precipitated the bench-clearing fight, were both booed at every opportunity.

Jon Jay robbed Jay Bruce with a leaping catch at the right-field wall to end the fourth and retreated while battling the sun for another fine grab on Edgar Renteria’s drive near the warning track with two on in the seventh.

Padres 5 Giants 3: In San Francisco, Will Venable hit his second home run of the season and San Diego pounced on Tim Lincecum in a victory over San Francisco.

Chase Headley , Orlando Hudson and Ryan Ludwick each had an RBI off Lincecum (6-7) to chase the Giants’ ace after five innings. Nick Hundley added an RBI single in the eighth and Venable’s solo shot came in the ninth.

Clayton Richard (5-9) struck out two and gave up two hits and three walks in five innings. After two separate four-game losing streaks this season, the lefty has won three straight.

Heath Bell allowed a run in the ninth and put the potential tying runs in scoring position with one out. Then he got Andres Torres to fly out and Aaron Rowand to ground out for his 25th save.

Diamondbacks 8 Brewers 6: In Milwaukee, Chris Young drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the ninth inning and Arizona overcame a grand slam by pitcher Shaun Marcum, rallying from a five-run deficit to beat slumping Milwaukee.

The Diamondbacks scored in every inning from the fourth through ninth after falling into a 6-1 hole against the best home team in the majors.

Miguel Montero and Wily Mo Pena homered for the Diamondbacks, who have lost six of nine.

Corey Hart added a solo shot for the Brewers, but the bullpen failed to hold on for the second straight day. Milwaukee also squandered a five-run lead against the Twins on Sunday.

Sam Demel (2-2) worked a perfect eighth for the win and David Hernandez struck out the side to convert his fourth save in place of closer J.J. Putz , on the disabled list with right elbow tendinitis.

Braves 4 Rockies 1: In Atlanta, Freddie Freeman homered twice to drive in three runs, Tommy Hanson combined with two relievers on a four-hitter and Atlanta beat Colorado.

Freeman’s two-run shot in the first inning drove in Brian McCann , who singled with two outs off Ubaldo Jimenez (3-8). The rookie first baseman hit his 11th homer in the eighth off Matt Reynolds .

Jimenez was facing the Braves for the first time since throwing a no-hitter at Turner Field on April 17, 2010. It was the first no-hitter in Rockies history.

Hanson (10-4) gave up one run on four hits and one walk in seven innings. He had six strikeouts while lowering his ERA to 2.52. He ranks among the league leaders in wins and ERA but wasn’t selected to the NL All-Star team.

Jonny Venters worked around a walk in the eighth and Craig Kimbrel pitched a perfect ninth for his 25th save.

Mets 5 Dodgers 2: In Los Angeles, Angel Pagan , Carlos Beltran and Daniel Murphy had RBI doubles in the sixth inning after the Mets were held hitless through five by Rubby De La Rosa, and New York went on to beat Los Angeles.

Chris Capuano (8-7) allowed six hits and two runs in six innings. The left-hander struck out five and walked two in winning his third decision in a row.
