- DUBAI: A Bahraini opposition official says reconciliation talks between Bahrain's rulers and the opposition have started after months of anti-government protests and harsh crackdowns in the Gulf kingdom.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he isn’t authorized to speak to the media, confirmed that the talks opened Tuesday in Manama.
The monarchy has made token concessions ahead of the talks, including sanctioning an international probe into the conduct of security forces during unrest in which 32 people died.
Bahrain’s main opposition party, Al Wefaq, reluctantly joined the government-designed talks since hundreds of protesters remain jailed.
