He said Minister of Rural and Municipal Affairs Prince Mansour bin Miteb has approved a request from the committee to monitor the elections.

At a press conference at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he said 1,700 Saudi lawyers accredited by the Ministry of Justice will monitor the elections with other parties concerned to ensure transparency and integrity of the process.

"Out of its social responsibility toward society, the committee will monitor the elections and submit a detailed report to the authorities concerned about the polls," he said.

Garoub said the general committee for the elections has promised to extend all support to the lawyers to help them do their job. "The mechanisms and modalities for the monitoring process will soon be announced," he added.

A total of 5,609 candidates are contesting the elections in 855 constituencies spread over 16 regions.

Garoub welcomed the participation of all other civic societies including the Saudi Journalists Authority, the National Society for Human Rights, the Saudi Geographical Commission, the Saudi Authority of Engineers, the Saudi Economic Society and the Consumer Protection Society.

"This initiative is an expression of appreciation and gratitude to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for his ambitious project to develop the judicial system and his all-out efforts to further develop the country," he said.

Garoub urged the king to approve the committee’s proposal submitted to the justice minister requesting to join other Saudi professional societies and contribute positively to the development of the judicial system.
