The government won the backing of 322 lawmakers in the 550-seat Parliament on Wednesday. President Abdullah Gul approved the Cabinet, including a minister to oversee Turkey’s European Union bid, last week.

Erdogan, whose party won a landslide victory in June 12 elections, has promised economic stability and more rights as demanded by the European Union.

The government said it will also focus on drafting a new constitution — the current one is a legacy of the 1980 military coup — to improve rights and freedoms.
