- BERLIN: German authorities say they have arrested a Turkish man on charges he was a member of a banned leftist group that seeks armed struggle against the Turkish government.
The federal prosecutors’ office said Thursday that 37-year-old Erol G., whose last name wasn’t released in accordance with German privacy laws, was arrested by Cologne police on Wednesday.
He’s accused of being a member since at least early 2007 of the Turkish Marxist terrorist organization DHKP-C. In addition to raising funds for the group, prosecutors say he distributed propaganda material for it.
DHKP-C is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union. It has claimed responsibility for a number of assassinations and bombings in Turkey since the 1970s.
