The PME on Tuesday warned of rain and thunder as rain clouds gathered in the southern areas of Najran, Jazan, Asir and Baha.

The met office said the rain clouds might extend over the Taif heights in Makkah region and any rains could be accompanied with active surface winds. The office asked people to be cautious against this possible bad weather that might continue for a week.

As the outlook in the southern areas continued to be wet, the Saudi Geological Survey announced that a new minor tremor, 3.4 on the Richter scale, hit the areas to the northeast of Al-Qunfudah province. A quake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale was felt in a number of towns and villages in the southern areas on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, the presidency said rain and winds have continued to affect the area during the past week. The tumultuous weather left 18 villages in the province of Uhud Al-Masarha and 27 others to the south and north of Abu Areesh province without electricity.

The floods that resulted from the heavy rains in Jazan on Sunday prevented people from reaching their homes, thereby marring the Eid celebrations of many who hoped to make it to their villages and towns for the holidays. Officials also said there were no reports of deaths or material damage.

With the rains affecting life in the areas, the quake and its aftershocks too left the people shaken. The Director of the National Center for Earthquakes and Volcanoes, Hani Muhammad Zahran, said the tremors took place at 7:11 p.m. at the depth of 31 km.

Zahran said the residents of Baha and Asir felt the tremors but no losses were reported.

The Civil Defense warned the residents not to panic in case of earthquake, to stay away from windows and take cover under beds or tables. It asked residents living in high-rise buildings not to rush outside. It also warned residents to keep away from high buildings and electricity posts.
