The top-seeded Chela will meet seventh-seeded Andreas Seppi in the quarterfinals. The Italian defeated Igor Andreev of Russia 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

Sixth-seeded Potito Starace of Italy withdrew while trailing Pere Riba of Spain 6-1, 3-2.
 

In Metz, France, Gilles Muller of Luxembourg beat French wild card Benoit Paire 7-6 (5), 6-4 Wednesday to reach the Moselle Open quarterfinals.

The eighth-seeded Muller had 12 aces.

Arnaud Clement of France, Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany and Igor Kunitsyn of Russia all advanced to the second round.

Clement, the 2003 champion, defeated Michael Llodra 6-3, 6-4 and will next face Nicolas Mahut of France. The seventh-seeded Kohlschreiber beat Jonathan Dasnieres de Veigy 6-4, 7-6 (4), and Kunitsyn downed Kenny De Schepper 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

Kohlschreiber will next play Dutch qualifier Igor Sijsling, and Kunitsyn will meet sixth-seeded Xavier Malisse of Belgium.
 

In Guangzhou, China, defending champion Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia advanced to the quarterfinals of the Guangzhou Open by beating Mandy Minella of Luxembourg 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 Wednesday.

Top-seeded Maria Kirilenko also advanced, defeating Iryna Bremond of France 6-3, 6-1.

Zheng Jie, the last Chinese player in the tournament, moved into the next round by beating Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand 6-3, 7-5, while Zhao Yijing of China lost to Tetiana Luzhanska of Ukraine 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
 

Meantime, the United States has been drawn to play at Switzerland in the first round of the 2012 Davis Cup.

Switzerland will be at home for the best-of-five series from Feb. 10-12.

The teams last played in the opening round in 2009, when the Americans beat Switzerland 4-1 in Birmingham, Alabama Roger Federer did not play in that series and has not played in the first round since 2004.

Spain and Argentina, the 2011 finalists, were the top seeds at Wednesday’s draw. Spain will host Kazakhstan and Argentina will travel to Germany.

In other first-round World Group ties, it’s: Austria vs. Russia; Canada vs. France; Czech Republic vs. Italy; Serbia vs. Sweden; and Japan vs. Croatia.
