The Tech Museum in the US city of San Jose, pulled back the proverbial curtain on one of the world’s most pioneering civilizations recently revealing an incredible exhibition “Islamic Science Rediscovered” that boldly underlines the remarkable contributions of Muslim scholars from the Golden Age of Islam (700-1700 CE) in science and technology. Guest speakers at the opening included the renowned essayist, playwright, attorney and humorist Wajahat Ali, Exhibition creator Ludo Verheyen, CEO of MTE Studios of Dubai and Cape Town, South Africa, San Jose City Councilman Sam Liccardo and The Tech Museum Board Chair Ann Bowers. Ann said a couple of years ago she was traveling overseas when she saw the “Islamic Science Rediscovered” exhibition and was surprised how little she knew about the Islamic Golden Age and its thinkers’ influence on modern medicine, mathematics, astronomy and more. Today the display at The Tech Museum is a far enhanced version of the previous exhibition. The 40-station, multimedia exhibition highlights how Muslims worked harmoniously alongside people of different faiths and races across Africa, Asia and Europe. The blockbuster exhibition ‘Islamic Science Rediscovered’ also known as “Sultans of Science” covers the main fields of Islamic scientific endeavor. “Islamic Science Rediscovered” is meant to focus on increasing knowledge and understanding of the many invaluable contributions that have come from the Islamic world, MTE Studios CEO Ludo Verheyen, said.

The shortlist for the Cityscape Awards for Architecture in Emerging Markets has been released. Projects from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Azerbaijan, India, and China have all made the cut. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on Sept. 27 at the Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai. The Cityscape Awards were founded as a platform to reward excellence in architecture and design from emerging regions of the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia (excluding Japan, New Zealand and Australia) as well as to recognize projects that have shown outstanding design, performance, vision and achievement in key areas of architecture. There were over 300 entries from 32 countries, with an internationally acclaimed panel of judges, including Rashad M. Bukhash, director of the Architectural Heritage Department, Dubai Municipality; Sadek Owainati, co-founder and board member of Emirates Green Building Council; Lee Sang-Leem, president of the Federation of Institutes of Korean Architects and the Korean Institute of Architects. One of the UAE based judges, Nadine Al Bitar, adviser to Abu Dhabi Municipality, said: “Architecture is gaining ground in the emerging markets because developers and master real estate companies are realizing the importance of high quality design.” Chris Speller, group exhibition director, Cityscape, said: “The awards have become a staple of Cityscape events and have grown in popularity and reputation year-on-year.” The nominations submitted this year were of outstanding level, making it a challenging job for our judges to whittle down the shortlist.

In the latest Euro NCAP crash test, the BMW X3 achieved the highest rating of 5 stars. The second-generation Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) earned its top marks in this challenging test for new vehicles thanks to its comprehensive range of standard safety equipment and effective occupant protection in various types of collision. Achieving the best rating in the Euro NCAP crash test is proof of the very high level of the safety concept developed for the BMW X models. The new BMW X3 boasts an extremely stable body structure, and the forces exerted on the vehicle in a collision are deflected along precisely defined load paths and absorbed by generous deformation zones. In their evaluation of the crash test results, the assessors concluded that the new BMW X3 provides a high degree of occupant safety in all seats. Its stable passenger cell provides comprehensive injury protection in a front-end collision for both the driver and the passengers, regardless of a person’s size and the position of their seat. Here the SAV was awarded outstanding ratings for the protection of children aged around three years or 18 months in the relevant-sized child seats. For its side impact protection, the BMW X3 likewise achieved the maximum available points.
