- LUCKNOW, India: Police and rescue workers are still searching for an American student who fell into a river while trekking in northern India, though the US program he was on says he is presumed dead.
Thomas Levy Plotkin has been missing since Sept. 22, when fellow hikers say he twisted his ankle and tumbled from a 490-foot (150-meter) ridge into the surging Gori River.
He had been trekking the 37-mile (60-kilometer) Johar trail in the northern state of Uttarakhand while in India on a semester program with the Wyoming-based National Outdoor Leadership Program.
Local magistrate J.S. Rathore said Thursday that the search would continue “for a few more days,” though hope of finding the 20-year-old alive was fading.
The program said it presumed “Thomas has not survived.”
