At 0600 GMT, Ophelia was about 730 miles (1,175 kilometers) south of Bermuda, with maximum sustained winds near 90 mph (145 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. It was moving north-northwest at about 9 mph (15 kph).

The storm reached hurricane strength Thursday afternoon. It is the fourth hurricane of the season.

Earlier, Ophelia caused flooding and cut off communities on Dominica. About 1,600 people were stranded on the island and nearly a dozen cars washed away.

Tropical Storm Philippe remains far from land, moving west-northwest with winds of about 45 mph (72 kph).

In the Pacific, Tropical Storm Hilary continues to weaken and is expected to become a remnant low.
