- JEDDAH: Two people including a police officer were killed and two others injured in a gunbattle between smugglers and border guard officers in the southern Jazan province on Tuesday, a spokesman of the border guards said in a statement on Wednesday.
The spokesman said the clashes started when a group of smugglers opened fire against a border guard patrol in the Daer sector of Jazan when the officers stopped them from sneaking into the country illegally.
"The border guard patrol returned fire, which resulted in the death of one smuggler and another being injured, who was arrested," the spokesman said, adding that police seized 13 weapons from them.
He identified the slain officer as Muhammad bin Farhan Al-Qahtani and the injured officer as Majed bin Oqla Al-Anazi, who has been admitted to hospital. The condition of Al-Anazi, whose left leg was wounded by gunfire, is stable, the spokesman added.
