- JAKARTA, Indonesia: Rescuers say the number of people killed when a bridge collapsed on Indonesia’s remote island of Borneo has climbed to 18, with two dozen others missing and feared dead.
Sunarbowo Sandi, head of the search-and-rescue team, said a sonar device was being used Tuesday to comb the murky bed of the 160-foot-deep (50-meter-deep) Mahakam River.
Some missing bodies are believed trapped inside sunken buses and cars. Sandi says that more than 30 divers are ready to recover them.
The 770-yard (700-meter) structure — built to resemble the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco — collapsed last week as a steel support cable snapped while repair work was being done.
The 10-year-old bridge linked the towns of Tenggarong and Samarinda in East Kalimantan province.
