- NEW DELHI: Shops in India have closed their doors in observance of a nationwide strike to protest the government’s decision to allow big-box retailers in the country.
Hundreds of traders marched on New Delhi streets demanding the Cabinet revoke its decision.
The strike was only partially observed in New Delhi, Mumbai and other cities.
The government provoked furor last week by deciding foreign retailers could own up to 51 percent of supermarkets and 100 percent of single-brand stores.
Shopowners fear that the entry of companies such as Wal-Mart and Tesco will crush local mom-and-pop stores.
