Speaking to reporters, he said the campaign was aimed at creating a society free from drugs. "Drug abuse is an international issue that demands global action," he said.

The campaign includes seminars, exhibitions at schools, a football tournament, special awareness programs and contests on painting and making models.

Capt. Nasser Al-Shahrani expressed his hope that the campaign would contribute to eradicating drug abuse from the Saudi society. He highlighted the negative effects of drugs.

The launching ceremony was attended by about 700 prominent personalities including government officials, businessmen and academics.

Addressing the opening session, Mazen Batterjee, vice chairman of Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said drugs are as dangerous as war and hunger.

He said the growing use of drugs was threatening world peace and stability.
