The third annual Abu Dhabi International Triathlon, voted the world’s most glamorous triathlon and one of the fastest growing events-of-its-kind in the world, will kick off at 6:30 a.m. today on the Abu Dhabi Corniche – showcasing one of the sport’s most picturesque host cities to over 6,000 spectators who will experience a day full of family fun and activities.

More than 900 athletes have arrived in the emirate especially for the prestigious Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority-organized event. They join more than 50 of the sport’s top elite athletes, the strongest line-up in the event’s three year history, which has spent the week sight-seeing at Abu Dhabi’s many attractions and cultural destinations. 

Last year’s long distance champion, Frederik Van Lierde, has been impressed by the Arabian hospitality while preparing to defend his Abu Dhabi crown for a second year in a row. said the 32-year-old Belgian.  

Inspirational mother and professional triathlete Nikki Butterfield and her daughter were given an exclusive tour of the Falcon Hospital Abu Dhabi, the biggest of its kind in the world, and a first-hand look at the majestic bird, the national emblem of the United Arab Emirates.

Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority has also put out a rallying call to all fans to come down and cheer on their fellow countrymen and women. A huge free-to-the-public activation program is running on the Corniche Public beach, East Plaza.  For those wanting to get involved with the race, fans can chill out in front of the giant screen or try their hand at winning great prizes on the ‘beat the elite’ bike challenge with giant, take home Polar watches or free-night stays at the event’s official hotel, the Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana.

In addition, the finish line zone will be packed with great entertainment from dancers, fire breathers, juggler, stilt walkers and traditional Ayala dancers.

The first male elites are expected to cross the finish line at 1:30 p.m.
