The major cause of sudden cardiac arrest is a condition known as fibrillation. Normally, the heart beats in an organized fashion, allowing it to deliver oxygen to itself, the brain and other body systems. This rhythmic and organized activity causes blood to flow throughout the body. When the heart is in fibrillation, it is unable to create organized activity, and all blood flow stops, causing severe insult and ending in death of the victim.
The AED is designed to deliver a shock to the heart in an attempt to break the cycle of unorganized activity and restore organized function and activity of the heart muscle.
The best feature is that the AED is automatic. You do not need to be an emergency medical technician, paramedic, nurse or doctor to use one. The operation of the device is simple, directed, and extremely effective in restoring organized activity to the heart muscle. To use an AED, take the following steps:
1. Activate the emergency medical service system by calling 997;
2. Begin CPR – rapid and effective chest compression and breathing for the victim;
3. Turn on the AED, attach the pads, and plug in the cable;
4. Stop CPR, stand clear, and follow the instructions from the AED;
5. If shock is advised, clear the patient and press the button;
6. Allow the AED to reassess the victim and follow the instructions from the AED.
