A spokesperson for the Zintan militia, Khaled Kar, said Thursday that Zintan commanders will hand over the Tripoli airport to the Ministry of Interior within a week.

The Zintan militia were part of the Libyan revolutionaries who swept through Tripoli in August, toppling Muammar Qaddafi from power after months of armed conflict.

Since then, their well-trained fighters have been running the airport, sparking government concerns about having such a key institution outside their control.

They have come under intense pressure to give up responsibility for the airport.
