The Sri Lankan military and ethnic Tamil rebels have been accused of killing thousands of civilians in the final months of their quarter-century war in 2009.

A proposed UN Human Rights Council resolution urges Sri Lanka to investigate. The government says it interferes in the country’s internal affairs. India has yet to take a stance on the issue.

Lawmakers from ethnic Tamil regions in southern India shut down the upper house Tuesday with protests demanding India support the resolution.

The protest was another sign of growing international pressure on Colombo.
