- GENEVA: Sri Lankans protesting outside the UN in Geneva say they oppose international efforts to hold their nation accountable for alleged abuses during the government’s war with the separatist Tamil Tigers that ended in 2009.
Sujeth Gunasakra, a factory worker from Milan, Italy, says he and other protesters filled dozens of chartered buses from around Europe to tell the UN Human Rights Council on Monday it must “not support the Tigers” by adopting a US-backed resolution calling for accountability.
Geneva police spokesman Patrick Pulh said 300 people attended the demonstration.
Many waved banners and the loudest chants denounced Britain’s Channel 4 TV, which aired footage alleging the government carried out summary executions and put war crime suspects in senior posts.
