- UNITED NATIONS: African Union mediator Thabo Mbeki has urged the UN Security Council to act to stop the fighting between Sudan and South Sudan, warning that they are locked in a “logic of war” with hard-liners increasingly in control.
US Ambassador Susan Rice briefed reporters about the former South African president’s closed discussion via videoconference with council members Tuesday.
Mbeki is trying to lead peace talks between Sudan and South Sudan. Rice said Mbeki “described a situation in which both sides are locked in, and I quote, ‘a logic of war.’“
She said Mbeki called on the council to engage directly with both governments.
Rice said the council would discuss how to address the situation, including possible sanctions.
