- The Kingdom’s Ministry of Water and Electricity initiated the competition “Our Water, Our Life,” challenging high school and university students to create a awareness campaign to guide Saudi households and individuals on the most efficient methods of water conservation.
The initiative is organized by the BMG Foundation in consortium with SABIC as technical and strategic partner.
The Ministry has joined hands with the Kingdom’s private sector under the slogan “The decision is yours.”
This competition is the start of various initiatives aiming to inform the public about water conservation. “Our Water, Our Life” initiative went on a roadshow, touring the Kingdom’s popular universities and schools to increase students’ involvement and spread awareness.
The tour launched in Jeddah with Dar Al-Hekma College and Effat University for females, CBA, Batterjee Medical College and Jeddah Prep School among others; followed by King Saud University and Alfaisal University in Riyadh, and the University of Dammam and Prince Mohammed University in the Eastern Province.
Attending these conferences were the BMG Foundation team, representatives from the Ministry of Water and Electricity, including members of KAU Media Club; while in Riyadh, students from Najd School performed an excellent poem recital specially written for “Our Water, Our Life” in Arabic, English, French, Italian, Spanish and Filipino.
One of the aims of this competition is to create a buzz about water awareness in the Kingdom, and this message was compounded with the support of the popular Saudi comedian Bader Saleh on his YouTube program “Eysh Elly” who promoted the video created by BMG Foundation to raise awareness about water issues.
Since the videos viral debut, it has garnered over 60,000 views within days (YouTube: “Our Water, Our Life” Initiative), and is gaining strong popularity with the Twitter population, particularly when Ahmed Alshugairi tweeted about it. It is this buzz that BMG Foundation, SABIC and the Ministry of Water and Electricity have tapped into in order to spread awareness among the youth through social media outlets.
The winning water conservation campaign will be spread nationwide via all possible mediums in order to promote collective behavioral change toward the consumption of water.
Final submission date for all campaigns is May 15.
BMG Foundation Chairman Basil Al-Ghalayini expressed his appreciation to all participating universities and schools that hosted the conference throughout the Kingdom.
