Al-Toukhi leads consortium for SR 11 bn Yanbu power plant

Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) Gov. Abdul Rahman bin Mohammed Al-Ibrahim, announced that with the support of Madinah Gov. Prince Abdulaziz bin Majed bin Abdulaziz, Minister of Water and Electricity Abdullah Al-Hussayen, signed Yanbu Power and Desalination Plant Phase–3 contracts on Dec. 19 with local and international companies for the power project worth SR 11.23 billion ($ 2.99 billion). The contracts were signed with a consortium led by Al-Toukhi Company for Industry, Trading and Contracting (Saudi Arabia), and with Shanghai Electric Co. (China) and Samsung Engineering Co. (Korea) to construct one of the world’s largest power plants, which will produce 2,700 MW by utilizing the latest technology, including five super critical boilers, steam turbines and generators and flue gas treatment.
About 1850 MW will be exported to the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) and 650 MW to Power and Water Utility Company for Jubail and Yanbu (MARAFIQ), and 200 MW and steam will feed the water desalinization unit. The plant will be constructed at Yanbu and will be located in an area adjacent to the existing SWCC plants.
The SWCC governor pointed out that this project aims to fulfill the region's need for desalinated water, as urbanization and population in the region of Madinah is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, as well as increasing in the numbers of visitors to the Prophet's Mosque throughout the year, in line with the government of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah’s directives to provide desalinated water to all cities and provinces.
He highlighted that after offers from bidders were received, SWCC had been actively seeking to improve the efficiency of the project. This has been done without any increase in prices and therefore led to fuel saving of more than five million barrels per year.
